AP® African American Studies is an interdisciplinary course that examines the diversity of African American experiences through direct encounters with authentic and varied sources. Students explore key topics that extend from early African kingdoms to the ongoing challenges and achievements of the contemporary moment. Given the interdisciplinary character of African American studies, students in the course will develop skills across multiple fields, with an emphasis on developing historical, literary, visual, and data analysis skills. This course foregrounds a study of the diversity of Black communities in the United States within the broader context of Africa and the African diaspora.

ERIC D. CROWELL
Eric D. Crowell is a distinguished educational consultant with a rich career spanning over 28 years. His expertise lies in teaching and academic consulting, with an emphasis on AP African American Studies and Social Studies. Currently, Eric teaches at La Mirada High School, where he has taught AP African American Studies, United States History, and Psychology. Eric has a Master’s Degree in Education with a specialization in Cross-Cultural Teaching from National University. He also earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Science from California State University Los Angeles.
Eric is an AP African American Studies Consultant with the College Board providing specialized training to educators across the nation, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach the course.
His commitment to equity and educational excellence is further demonstrated through his work as an academic consultant at UCLA’s Center X supporting Los Angeles Unified School District social studies teachers and his work at Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) supporting AVID teachers.
Eric is certified in the use of AI technologies, specifically the Program Class Companion and AI-Magic School platforms. These certifications enable him to personalize learning experiences and integrate cutting-edge technology to support student success.
Finally, Eric has been honored as a National Society of High School Scholars Educator of Distinction award for his dedication to supporting college-bound students.
